EURO 2016 highlights at Matmut ATLANTIQUE

EURO 2016 is now over !

Before closing this page in the stadium's history and starting the new Ligue 1 season with FCGB in a few weeks' time, let's take a look back at our fondest memories of EURO 2016 at Matmut ATLANTIQUE!

Our first memory will undoubtedly be that of the first two anthems of the competition, the Welsh and Slovakian, sounding in the Matmut ATLANTIQUE. Here you can listen, or listen again, to the Welsh anthem taken up by 20,000 supporters, a truly emotional moment. Wales went on to beat Slovakia 2-1.

Hungary's surprise victory over Austria (2-0) is also worthy of note, as few would have bet on it... However, the Hungarian team made it all the way to the Round of 8, where they were eventually eliminated by Belgium.

For the third match, the Matmut ATLANTIQUE played host to Belgium and Ireland, but also, and above all, to their fans who had turned out in force for the occasion. We were impressed by the atmosphere they created in the stadium, and by the excellent understanding between them. Beyond the stadium itself, the whole city of Bordeaux was captivated by the Irish supporters, as this article shows.

The Matmut ATLANTIQUE also saw Croatia defeat defending champions Spain!

A ¼ final at Matmut ATLANTIQUE

Then, on June 27, the line-up for the ¼ final in Bordeaux was announced! The Matmut ATLANTIQUE was fortunate enough to host the Germany/Italy match, a match that many people qualified as a final before the final. Of this match, everyone will keep in mind the endless penalty shootout where the two best goalkeepers in the world, Buffon and Neuer, faced each other. Germany emerged victorious from this match, and a few days later met the French team in the ½ final.

We will, of course, remember every one of the 13 goals scored at the Bordeaux stadium (an average of 2.6 goals scored per match), including the first, scored by Bale, which we suggest you watch again here. We'll take pleasure in remembering all the great players who have trodden our turf throughout this competition: Alaba, Bale, Chiellini, Hazard, Iniesta, Neuer, Özil, Piqué... to name but a few.

We'll also have fond memories of the fervor, energy and great spirit of each and every fan who came to the Bordeaux stadium.

Finally, of course, we'll remember all the messages of sympathy sent to the Bordeaux stadium via our social networks (thanks again to Bixente Lizarazu for his compliment).

One thing is certain, the Matmut ATLANTIQUE has written a new page in its history by hosting 5 exceptional EURO 2016 matches!
